Manipulated photos from world governments

After a suspected 'photoshopped' photo of Kim Jong-il was covered by the Times of London and the NY Times this week, I was surprised to hear today that an altered image was supplied by the U.S. Department of Defense to the Associated Press.

A couple of these articles mention the recent Iranian missile test photos that were digitally manipulated. I'm wondering why the NY Times hasn't covered the U.S. photo manipulation yet.

This is frustrating as a media consumer but especially as a photojournalist. When photos like these surface in respectable news outlets, every photojournalist's credibility suffers. It sucks, but that's the way it is.
